The Parent Resources section includes a growing collection of resources for families looking to support their children’s well being and academic success.  Parent involvement is critical in developing strong home to school connections.  A note, these resources offer a point of view and are not exhaustive in nature. MEND encourages families to continue to pursue their own personal inquiry on topics of interest or join in available MEND learning opportunities.

This resource, compiled by the Kawartha Pine Ridge DIstrict School Board and designed by kidshavestresstoo.org, is a quick and easy guide of parent look fors of stress and follow up strategies and tools to address stress.  This beginners guide offers a valuable insight of stress in young children.

Parent/Guardian Guide

 

The DDSB Parent/Guardian Guide to Special Education provides families with an overview of the most important information of the step by step process school’s use when supporting students with identified learning and well being needs.  Families should familiarize themselves with this informational document before attending an IPRC (Individual Program Review Committee) meeting for their child.  If you have questions about this document, you should reach out to your child’s classroom teacher, school resource teacher, or administration before the meeting.

DDSB Inclusive Student Services

(Special Education)

 

If you have a child with special needs, then the DDSB’s Inclusive Student Services web page is for you.  Equip yourself as a parent with the knowledge to ask your child’s school the right questions in order to best support your child’s learning needs.  This site offers information about the identification process, resources and supports, as well as special education class placements.  If you should need additional information particular to your child’s needs, reach out to your child’s teacher, the school’s resource teacher, or your administration.

Teaching Truth and

Reconciliation in Canada

 

Author’s Linda Morcom and Kate Freeman, provide readers with a ready snapshot of how schools and educators are currently supporting the work of Truth and Reconciliation as settlers.  Morcom and Freeman identify the necessary need to act in acknowledging and repairing harms experienced by Indigenous communities (94 Calls to Action), but they also highlight the work non indigenous populations (including immigrant populations) must engage in first themselves. As a parent this read is a must as a beginning step in helping our children understand the responsibilities to act on Truth and Reconciliation as settlers.

Hair Love

 

Hair is an Oscar Award winning short film that tells the story of an African American father learning how to do his daughter’s hair for the first time. This loving story of a father and daughter is a wonderful example for parents of reflective and responsive stories that are available to support the identity of our racialized children.
