Resources provided under Educator Guides have been offered as general overviews of practices and customs during the month of Ramadan. Practices and customs will vary between families and individuals based on culture, generation, orientation, and sect. Educators and schools are encouraged to engage with their school communities to determine best practices and appropriate responsive approaches.

DDSB ESL Department Educator Site
If you are an administrator or classroom teacher, you will find the DDSB ESL Department Educator Site both relevant and purposeful to the service of English Language Learners. This site includes reference to the STEP continuum, Ministry policy, and technology resources applicable to supporting barrier free access to curriculum.

As always, we encourage educators to review all resources before their use in an effort to ensure that they appropriately meet the needs of their students and school communities.

RecomMENDed Classroom Booklist
The MEND classroom booklist provides an overview of many current and available book titles that explore diverse Muslim expereinences and highlight the intersectionality of individuals. Book suggestions range from primary to senior and should be previewed by school teams to assess whether content is appropriate to the needs of classroom learners.

TDSB Islamic Heritage Month Resource and Guidebook
This resource is both designed and developed by the Toronto District School Board and provides a wide overview of diverse Muslim Communities within ten different themes including social advocacy, islamophobia, and history. Both lessons and online resources can be adapted to meet the needs of a K-12 audience.

The Green Square Campaign
Material for Educators (NCCM)
As of January 2020, the Federal Government has designated January 29th as the day to remember the victims of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec Shooting.
NCCM has gathered a variety of resources such as curricular approaches and mental health supports that will equip all educators to be able to successfully mark this day and prompt important conversations in classrooms that work to affirm the inclusion of Muslim identities.

Board Resources which provide the underlying foundations of anti oppressive practice and the work of inclusion across the Durham District School Board, have been provided. MEND works in support of these documents, as well as others, in the creation of barrier free and equitable learning environments where all learners, staff, and communities can thrive.

Human Rights Code
The Ontario Human Rights Code is a comprehensive and foundational Ministry resource that provides direction for discrimination and harassment free services in places like schools, education systems, and other public and private institutions. The Ontario Human Rights Code outlines prohibited acts based on grounds of discrimination as it pertains to age, ancestry, citizenship, colour, creed/religion, disability, ethnic origin, family status, gender expression, gender identity, marital status, place of origin, race, record of offences (in employment only), sex and sexual orientation.

Accommodating Creed in Schools
The Accommodating Creed in Schools DDSB document is a companion guide to DDSB’s Equity and Diversity Strategic Plan. This document provides guidance on how schools can provide inclusive, responsive, and barrier free opportunities to success for all learners. Embedded within this document is the “Accomodating for Creed Request Form” that families must activate when seeking accommodations- this form is designed to be completed in collaboration with the family, and school team.

for Black Student Success
This DDSB created document deconstructs anti black racism as it relates to the success of black students in education. Provided within the pages are specific best practices, considerations, and responsive approaches to teaching and learning. Central to this document is a respect to intersectionality and a focus on building relationships that honour the lived experiences of black communities.

The DDSB’s Equity and Diversity Strategic Plan, designed with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Anti Oppressive Practices at the forefront, leads school teams through identified best practices and guiding principles to serve the communities of DDSB. This strategic plan provides for the creation of safe and inclusive learning environments across all DDSB schools.
